What Are Dental
Veneers
?

Lady thinks something over

Veneers are extremely thin porcelain pieces that are cemented to a tooth to cover up extensive dental flaws. These versatile shells are customized to match or enhance the natural shape, color, and size of your teeth. Veneers are made from non-porous porcelain, meaning that they will be resistant to stains and discoloration and incredibly long-lasting with proper care. Our cosmetic dentists can provide you with veneers that can conceal flaws such as:

  • Spaces or gaps between teeth
  • Stubborn stains or discoloration
  • Cracks or chips
  • Worn-down or slightly crooked teeth
  • Misshapen teeth

The
Process
of Getting Veneers

Smiling dentist

Veneers usually require two appointments to be placed. During the first, you will undergo a consultation with our team to determine your goals and an exam to figure out the best solution for your teeth. Once we’re sure veneers will be a suitable treatment for you, we’ll remove a tiny amount of enamel from the teeth being treated to prepare them. We’ll then take bite impressions and send them to a lab where your veneers will be manufactured. We’ll adhere a temporary set of veneers to your teeth so you can get used to wearing them while your permanent set is being manufactured.

When we get your permanent veneers about two weeks later, you’ll come back to the office in Waverly. Then, we’ll remove your temporary veneers, cement your permanent set in place, make any final adjustments, and give them a thorough polishing. You’ll then be free to enjoy your beautiful new smile.

Veneer FAQs

Are Veneers Permanent?

Technically, veneers in Waverly are not permanent. After about fifteen years or so, you’ll likely have to replace them. However, what is considered permanent is the alteration to your natural enamel. After shaving off a small layer to make room for the veneers, it won’t grow back. To keep your teeth properly protected from bacteria and sensitivity, then, you’ll always have to have a veneer or crown in place. For this reason, professionals consider dental veneers an “irreversible” treatment.

Will I Still Be Able to Drink Coffee with Veneers?

The answer to this question also has a caveat – technically, there’s nothing stopping you from drinking coffee with dental veneers. You can do so without posing a risk to your oral health or structural integrity of your veneers. However, if you drink coffee every morning, even your stain-resistant veneers are likely to stain over time. If you’d rather keep them white and bright for as long as possible, we recommend drinking dark drinks like coffee through a straw and mitigating your consumption.

Do Veneers Give You a Lisp?

Veneers could very well change the way your teeth feel, especially when used to make certain pearly whites appear larger. Since a lot of the way that speech is articulated is through contact between your tongue and teeth, you might indeed have a lisp or trouble speaking at first. As you get used to the new shape and feel of your smile, though, you’ll be able to talk as you normally would.

How Many Veneers Will I Need?

It depends on how many visible teeth you’d like to cosmetically alter. Our cosmetic dentists in Waverly usually places between 6 and 8, but some patients need as many as 10 or 12! Rest assured, we’ll take your smile goals into account when planning your treatment, and let you know how many veneers you can expect to receive.

Can You Whiten Veneers?

Unfortunately, whitening agents are specially formulated for natural teeth and don’t have an effect on porcelain veneers. This means if you need to lift discoloration from your veneers, you’ll likely need to have them replaced or polished.

A whitening treatment will still brighten your other teeth, though! If you’d like a whiter smile, we recommend getting a whitening treatment first, so that when our cosmetic dentists color-match your veneers to your teeth, the shade will be consistent.
